Archbishop Elia of Finland was enthroned last Sunday at the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Helsinki during a historic ceremony attended by over 4,500 people. More than 500 were physically present, while approximately 4,000 joined online via live streaming. The event marked a significant milestone for the Autonomous Orthodox Church of Finland.
The December 15 ceremony was officiated by Metropolitan Arsenios of Austria, representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate, under whose jurisdiction the Finnish Church operates. Metropolitan Arsenios presented Archbishop Elia with the insignia of his office, including the white klobuk, a symbol of the leader of the Finnish Orthodox Church.
Messages of Encouragement and Prayers
Archbishop Emeritus Leo, who retired after more than two decades of service, delivered a message of encouragement to the new archbishop inspired by Solomon’s prayer: “I wish you wisdom to lead with justice and love.”
He also emphasized the importance of solidarity with the Ukrainian people affected by war, urging recognition of the humanity in every person who suffers.
Archbishop Elia’s First Address
In his first address as archbishop, His Eminence Elia expressed gratitude to those present and spoke about the immense responsibility entrusted to him.
He highlighted the Church’s role as a prophetic voice in addressing contemporary challenges, including war, the refugee crisis, and climate change:
“The Church must defend human dignity and serve as an example of ecological responsibility.”
Conclusion of the Ceremony
The enthronement ceremony concluded with a solemn liturgy attended by hierarchs and clergy from several countries, along with high-ranking officials from Finland and abroad. At the end, Archbishop Elia offered his thanks in multiple languages, asking the faithful for their prayers and support.
This enthronement marks a new chapter in the spiritual life of the Orthodox Church of Finland, with Archbishop Elia as a dedicated and visionary leader.
