Ambassador David Saranga visits Bukovina’s monasteries for first time: “It was amazing”

Israel’s Ambassador to Romania visited this week for the first time Bukovina and the Monasteries in Northern Romania. The Israeli Ambassador was impressed by the religious monuments but also by the warmth of the locals.

Nothing compares to the generous hospitality of the Romanian people, especially those from the Bukovina region, the Ambassador wrote on Facebook.

During the visit on April 21, Ambassador David Saranga was accompanied, on behalf of the Archdiocese of Suceava and Radauti, by Archdeacon Vasile M. Demciuc and Fr. Constantin Oprea.

“The Ambassador expressed gratitude for the reception, emphasizing that during his diplomatic mission in Romania, he learned the Romanian language, was able to understand better the culture, tradition and spirituality of the Romanian people, thus explaining the motivation why he chose to visit Suceava County. He mentioned that the State of Israel has beautiful connections with Romania, since the period when the painter Reuven Rubin, born in Romania, became the first Ambassador of Israel in our country.”

“He mentioned this fact because the first ambassador of the State of Israel in Romania painted at the end of the 19th century some paintings depicting churches and monasteries in Bukovina,” the Archdiocese representatives explained.

The Ambassador visited Voroneț, Moldovița, Sucevița and Putna Monasteries. His Excellency appreciated how these monasteries – historical monuments, part of them included in the UNESCO Heritage – are preserved. He also appreciated the existing monastic life and how the heritage pieces exhibited in the monastery museums are capitalized.

At Putna Monastery, Ambassador Saranga visited the iconography and restoration workshops. He noted that the Church knows how to preserve its values, which are a real card of spiritual identity of the Romanian people.
