Republic of Moldova establishes “Council of Memory” to commemorate victims of communist repression

The Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education and Research of Moldova have recently established the “Council of Memory,” a consultative body dedicated to honouring the victims of political repression under the totalitarian communist regime (1917-1990).

The founding order was signed on February 7 by Ministers Sergiu Prodan and Dan Perciun, aiming to contribute to developing a common European culture of remembrance.

Education and Historical Awareness

“Education plays a fundamental role in preserving historical memory and strengthening democratic values,” said Dan Perciun, Moldova’s Minister of Education and Research.

“By integrating historical truth accurately and with sound arguments into the school curriculum, we ensure that future generations understand the impact of political repression and contribute to fostering a conscious and responsible society.”

Sergiu Prodan, Minister of Culture, stressed the importance of honouring those who suffered and stated that acknowledging historical truth is both a moral and societal responsibility.

“There is political will, we have identified resources, but we still need to refine the vision of our message and the action plan to address what has been neglected for decades,” he added.

Council’s Mission and Responsibilities

Comprised of 11 experts, the Council of Memory will serve as a platform for dialogue and cooperation between public authorities, researchers, and institutions working on historical memory.

The council will:

  • Monitor commemoration initiatives for victims of political repression,
  • Support research and public awareness on the history of political persecution,
  • Preserve and manage historical archives and documentation,
  • Initiate projects to support museums and memorial sites dedicated to the victims of the communist regime.
