President Iohannis promulgates law establishing Day of 1848 Revolution Victory and Romanian Democracy

Last week, President Klaus Iohannis promulgated a law establishing the Day of the Victory of the 1848 Revolution and the Romanian Democracy, which also designated some localities as 1848 Revolution martyr cities.

The law designates June 11 as the Victory Day of the Romanian Revolution of 1848 and the Romanian democracy.

Prince Gheorghe Bibescu signed the “Islaz Proclamation” in Bucharest on June 11, 1848, recognising the temporary revolutionary government and its programme from June 9 in Islaz, Romanaţi county (today Teleorman county).

The central and local government, as well as non-governmental organisations, may organise events and public activities to commemorate this day.

Bucharest, Blaj, and Craiova are designated as martyr cities of the 1848 Revolution in recognition of the valour displayed and the remembrance of the martyrs who died in the struggle for the victory of the 1848 Revolution and the Romanian democracy.
