Metropolitan Antonie of Bessarabia and Her Excellency Fern Horine, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, discussed religious freedom and the Church’s social mission on Thursday.
The meeting took place at the Metropolis’ headquarters in Chișinău, where the Metropolitan outlined both the challenges facing Church communities and the projects being developed to support them.
Discussions highlighted the social and charitable work carried out by the Metropolis of Bessarabia through its parishes and the Diaconia Social Mission, which is marking its 25th anniversary, as well as initiatives supporting vulnerable families and developing local social services.
Metropolitan Antonie explained that priests, through their ongoing contact with community members, are often well placed to identify people in need of assistance.
The role of clergy in preventing domestic violence and addiction, in cooperation with partner organisations and institutions, was also emphasised.
The discussions also addressed the importance of freedom of religion, combating disinformation and the Republic of Moldova’s European integration process.
Shared ties and values
Ambassador Fern Horine expressed appreciation for the Church’s contribution and its potential to carry out pastoral and social activities for local communities.
In a Facebook post, representatives of the British Embassy in the Republic of Moldova highlighted the ties between the two countries and their shared values.
“The United Kingdom values dialogue, mutual respect and strong connections across Moldova’s society.”
Metropolitan Antonie thanked Ambassador Fern Horine for her visit and for her interest in the work of the Metropolis of Bessarabia.
