Patriarch Daniel: The Basilica Media Centre is a promoter of ecclesial and social communion in Romania and the diaspora

On Monday, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel praised the Basilica Media Centre of the Romanian Patriarchate as “a media ensemble necessary for the Romanian Orthodox Church in its mission of communicating the Gospel of Christ in the world.”

“The Basilica Media Centre, born in the Church and bearing the name of the Church, addresses with priority those who feel in the Church the love and help of the Most Holy Trinity,” Patriarch Daniel wrote in a message on the Feast of the Holy Trinity, marking the patronal feast of the Romanian Patriarchate’s media centre.

“This truth was fundamental in the two years of the pandemic when careful communication supported the spiritual communion between believers, physically separated from each other, but close to their neighbour through the Church’s prayer broadcast on radio or television,” the Patriarch of Romania added.

Basilica Media Centre of the Romanian Patriarchate – Announcing the blessing of the Holy Trinity for 15 years

Almost 15 years ago, on October 27, 2007, near the Patriarchal Cathedral, the Basilica Media Centre of the Romanian Patriarchate was established, a media ensemble necessary for the Romanian Orthodox Church in its mission to communicate the Gospel of Christ to the world.

This establishment was a new initiative but not an innovation in the mission of the Church.

In that year, the oldest member of the Media Centre, Radio Trinitas, already had almost ten years of experience, and the daily Lumina Newspaper had two years of uninterrupted publication.

However, the Romanian Orthodox Church needed to use a new possibility of proclaiming the Gospel provided by the development of the mass media.

Thus, in the autumn of 2007, the newly-established Trinitas TV and the Basilica News Agency joined Radio Trinitas and Lumina Newspaper to form the Basilica Media Centre together with the Press Office, which already existed as a sector of activity of the Romanian Patriarchate.

So, there are five components of the Basilica Media Centre. They address those who listen to the Word of the Gospel, those who look upon the portraits of the saints and the works of the Church, those who read spiritually uplifting texts, those who pray and feel peace and joy in the Divine Liturgy, and those who love the values of faith and merciful love.

The Basilica Media Centre, born in the Church and bearing the name of the Church, addresses with priority those who feel in the Church the love and help of the Most Holy Trinity. This truth was fundamental in the two years of the pandemic when careful communication supported spiritual communion between believers, physically separated from each other but close to their neighbour through the Church’s prayer broadcast on radio or television.

Especially in this Solemn Year of prayer in the Church’s life and the Christian’s life, we highlight the mission of live broadcasting the daily Divine Liturgy and publishing the words of teaching offered during the divine services.

This media activity of the Romanian Patriarchate, through its Basilica Media Centre, is known and appreciated by the Romanian faithful in the country and by Romanians living and working abroad.

The year 2021, which the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church proclaimed as the Solemn Year of the Pastoral Care of Romanians Abroad, was a time when the media activity of the Romanian Orthodox Church intensified through new programs (radio, television or newspaper), more news and messages for the benefit of Romanians in the country and the diaspora.

In the 15 years of radio, television, newspaper, news agency and press office activity, we could see that what unites the five media components is the mission of receiving and witnessing God’s blessing bearing fruit in the life of the Church and the Romanian people.

Thus, the Basilica Media Centre has become a promoter of ecclesial and social communion in the country and the Romanian Diaspora.

On this feast day, we extend warm thanks to those who support the work of the Romanian Patriarchate’s Basilica Media Centre: the hierarchs, clergy, monastics and lay faithful of the Romanian Orthodox Church for their missionary and humanitarian cooperation.

We congratulate those who work with great dedication in the Basilica Media Centre and thank them for their rich activity in communicating God’s merciful love to the world.

In this anniversary year, we ask the Most Holy Trinity to bless the staff of the Basilica Media Centre of the Romanian Patriarchate so that they may continue to be “a source of light, truth and joy, so that with a pure voice, with spiritual hymns, with chosen words and useful images” they may fulfil their mission of proclaiming the Gospel of Christ’s love and the work of His Church in the world.
