Metropolitan Petru blessed monument to victims of Stalinist regime in Chișinău

A monument to victims of the Stalinist regime in Moldova was reconstructed and blessed on Monday in Chișinău. Located in Mills’ Park, it is known as General Georgescu P. Ion’s Fountain.

His Eminence Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia blessed the monument dedicated to those who were killed in the basement of the Chişinău’s former Italian Consulate in 1941. HE Daniel Ioniţă, Ambassador of Romania to Chişinău attended the event.

The monument was restored based on archive photos from 1942. “In 1937, the monument was in the same place, near the road leading to former Buiucani village, now one of Chişinău’s sectors,” explained, quoted by the Romanian Television TVR, Iulian Rusanovschi, the philanthropist who initiated the action.

“The road passed through here on my right and, by looking at the 1942 maps, we decided to find the initial location of the fountain. It was 24 meters behind here, so we have decided to place it in this little square to make it more easily accessible,” said Iulian Rusanovschi.

The monument was raised by the Monumentum Association and the Iași branch of the Association of Romanian Christian Orthodox Students (ASCOR), with support from the Chişinău City Council and the Government of Romania.

The monument also commemorates the heroes and the victims of Stalinist repression – Romanians killed in 1941 in the basement of the city’s former Italian Consulate, also known as the former Marshal Badoglio House. The names of the 1941 victims will be inscribed on three stone slabs mounted on the fountain.
