The Metropolitan Synod of the Metropolis of Bessarabia convened Thursday for a working session chaired by His Eminence Metropolitan Petru, Archbishop of Chişinău, Metropolitan of Bessarabia, and Exarch of the Territories. Joining him were Bishop Antonie of Bălți and Bishop Veniamin of Southern Bessarabia, as the Synod delved into key matters concerning the spiritual, pastoral, social, and cultural mission of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Bessarabia.

The gathering was marked by a series of significant discussions and decisions, reflecting the Synod’s dedication to nurturing ecclesiastical life and strengthening the bonds of faith and identity across the region.

Milestone Decisions and Highlights

Election of an Assistant Bishop for Chişinău

The Synod laid the groundwork for selecting an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Chişinău. By approving the necessary procedures for submission to the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, this decision aims to bolster the pastoral and administrative work of the Archdiocese, ensuring it continues to thrive.

Invitation to Patriarch Daniel

In a historic move, the Synod expressed its desire to extend an official invitation to His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church to visit the Republic of Moldova.

Such a visit, the first of its kind by a Romanian Patriarch, would stand as a profound testament to the spiritual and cultural unity between Romanians on both sides of the Prut River.

Centennial Celebrations for 2025

As the Metropolis of Bessarabia marks its 100th anniversary, the Synod approved plans for a series of commemorative and cultural events.

These initiatives are designed to honour the spiritual heritage and unity of Romanians in Bessarabia while inspiring future generations to cherish their shared identity.

Eparchial Achievements and Expansion

The Synod reviewed reports detailing the pastoral and administrative accomplishments across its dioceses.

Discussions also addressed the integration of new parishes and monastic communities, further solidifying the Metropolis’ presence and mission in the region.

Church Affairs in Ukraine

The current ecclesiastical dynamics in Ukraine were thoroughly examined, with particular attention given to their impact on the mission of the Metropolis of Bessarabia and the broader Romanian Orthodox Church.

Enhancing Missionary and Social Efforts

Recognizing the vital role of outreach and development, the Synod adopted measures to enhance missionary work, social initiatives, and infrastructure projects, offering unwavering support to parishes and monastic communities across Bessarabia.

Renewing the Spirit of Unity and Mission

A clear objective drove this year’s first Synod meeting: to deepen the unity and mission of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Bessarabia.

The hierarchs reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating for the spiritual, cultural, and identity welfare of believers, building bridges across communities and strengthening their shared faith.

With 2025 marking the Centennial of the Metropolis, Thursday’s deliberations are a promising step toward honouring the past while shaping a future rooted in unity, faith, and shared purpose.
