In pictures: New Metropolitan of Symi ordained at the Ecumenical Patriarchate

His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew celebrated Sunday the Divine Liturgy at the St George Cathedral in the Phanar, during which Metropolitan-elect Chrysostom of Symi was ordained to the episcopate.

During its February 7 working session, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected the Very Rev. Archimandrite Chrysostomos Pitsis, Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis of Kos and Nisyros, as Metropolitan of Symi. The Metropolis of Symi constitutes of the island of Symi, part of the Dodecannese. The island is known for its 18th-century Venetian-styled Panormitis Monastery. In the church there is the famous icon of the Archangel Michael Panormitis, who is not only considered the island’s patron saint but also the guardian of sailors in the entire Dodecanese area.

The former Metropolitan of Symi, Tilos, Chalki and Kastellorizo bore the same name of Chrysostom and passed away to the Lord aged 74 at the beginning of January 2017.
