Chernivtsi street could be renamed to honour Metropolitan Saint Jacob of Putna

A street in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi could be renamed to honour the Holy Hierarch Jacob of Putna, Metropolitan of Moldavia, BucPress news agency reported, citing Molody Bukowinec newspaper.

According to the cited source, local authorities intend to rename approximately 40 streets whose names are still related to the history of Soviet space.

“We have a lot of outstanding personalities, worthy of being commemorated by naming streets in their honour,” said Maria Nykirska, member of the Committee for Place Names of the city of Chernivtsi.

Altaiska Street could be renamed Jacob of Putna Street. The new names proposed for the streets have already been approved during local public debates.

Saint Jacob of Putna, Metropolitan of Moldavia, was born on January 20, 1719, in a pious family in Bukovina. He carried out intense cultural and social activity and stood out as a promoter of Romanian culture and a skilful translator.

In 2016, to mark the 550th anniversary of the founding of Putna Monastery, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church resolved to canonise Metropolitan Jacob of Putna with a feast day on May 15.
