“In a world marked by extensive and rapid change, the diversification of means of communication and the use of artificial intelligence, written culture continues to be that magnificent point of reference for stability, discernment and depth,” Archbishop Nifon of Târgoviște, Honorary Metropolitan and Patriarchal Exarch, said on Friday.
“It helps us maintain balance, cultivate reflection and remain anchored in spiritual values, which form the foundation of our civilisation.”
The message was delivered on the occasion of the opening in Târgoviște of the Ion Heliade Rădulescu Publishing Fair, an event that has become a tradition in the city.
“In every age, the book remains a privileged space for the encounter between the human person and meaning, between tradition and renewal, between the memory of history and the aspirations of the future, in which the principal symbols are those of the spiritual world,” the hierarch continued.
“The book is not merely a cultural instrument, but a splendid work of responsibility, an act of affirming identity, a means of preserving the wisdom of our forebears, of expressing creativity and distinctiveness, and also of spiritual ennoblement.”
An annual book fair
The hierarch praised the Publishing Fair held annually in Târgoviște, describing it as a celebration of those who serve culture with dedication. He called the book “a bridge between generations, a wonderful space for dialogue, cooperation and reflection, a place where Romania’s fascinating spiritual and cultural heritage is preserved and transmitted”.
This year, the Târgoviște Archdiocese Publishing House is taking part in the event with new volumes intended to enrich the diocese’s cultural and theological heritage.
The titles include Princes of Târgoviște — Founders of Orthodox Spirituality and Metropolitan Ștefan I of Wallachia — Promoter of the Church’s Mission through Printing, as well as two booklets from the missionary and educational series dedicated to young people: The Family — Foundation of the Values of Christ’s Gospel and Faith and Witness in the Virtual Space.
Archbishop Nifon also recalled that cooperation between the Archdiocese of Târgoviște and the Ion Heliade Rădulescu County Library has resulted in valuable publishing and cultural projects, and thanked the institution’s director, Professor Erich Agnes.
