Târgoviște: Churches illuminated in red to raise awareness for persecuted Christians

Several churches whose history is linked to Wallachia’s holy prince Constantine Brâncoveanu were illuminated in red on August 16 in Târgoviște, a city situated 80 kilometres north-west of Bucharest, to mark the National Day of Remembrance of the Brâncoveanu Martyrs and of Awareness of Violence against Christians.

In addition to lighting their churches in red, the priests in the Archdiocese of Târgoviște spoke to the faithful about the sacrifice of the Holy Brâncoveanu Martyrs and about the fact that nowadays, Christianity is the most persecuted religion worldwide.

The National Day of Remembrance of the Brâncoveanu Martyrs and of Awareness of Violence against Christians was established in 2020, being celebrated on August 16, the same day the Orthodox Church remembers the Holy Brâncoveanu Martyrs.

The law that created this national day in Romania allows institutions and various public landmarks to be illuminated in red and hold public events and memorial activities.
