Romanian Patriarchate voices concern over growing social impact of gambling

The Romanian Patriarchate expresses deep concern regarding the scale and increasing impact of gambling in Romanian society, a phenomenon affecting not only personal lives but also the stability of families and communities.

Practices associated with gambling promote the illusion of rapid and effortless gain, fostering a mentality that can lead to addiction, as well as the loss of inner freedom and moral values.

Gambling addiction is not merely a behavioural problem, but a complex disorder characterised by neuroplastic remodelling and dysfunctions in brain systems similar to those described in substance addictions.

The Romanian Patriarchate calls for responsibility on the part of all those involved — individuals, families, institutions and public authorities — in order to limit the spread of this phenomenon, protect human dignity and encourage the common good.

We consider it necessary to intensify the promotion of policies and measures that discourage gambling addiction and provide concrete support both for those affected and for their families.

The pastoral experience of the Romanian Orthodox Church highlights numerous situations in which gambling addiction has generated severe financial imbalance, family tensions, profound suffering and social marginalisation, including cases of suicide, affecting especially vulnerable persons, including young people.

In this context, it is worth underlining the need for greater awareness of the real risks associated with these practices and of their long-term consequences.

At the same time, the Romanian Patriarchate reaffirms its pastoral commitment to support persons in difficulty through spiritual counselling, guidance and community solidarity, urging a rediscovery of the values of a balanced life and the prevention of addictions.

In the present context, the Romanian Patriarchate reiterates the importance of cultivating a life founded upon faith, work and assistance to one’s neighbour, as enduring foundations of a healthy and balanced society.
