Romanian parish in Nottingham receives vestment of Saint Demetrius the New

His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel has donated a sacred garment that covered the relics of Saint Demetrius the New to the Parish of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and Saint Spyridon, Bishop of Trimythous in Nottingham, United Kingdom.

The vestment was delivered to the newly established Archdiocese of Great Britain and Northern Ireland by Rasophore Damian from the Romanian Orthodox Skete in Kent (Canterbury).

According to the eparchy’s website, this marks the first time in the history of Romanian communities in the UK that a parish has received such an honor. The event also coincides with the 250th anniversary (2024) of the arrival of Saint Demetrius the New’s relics in Bucharest.

A Community of Faith and Miracles

The Romanian Orthodox community in the East Midlands region of the UK has a deep devotion to Saint Demetrius the New. Recognizing this, Father Dan Petru Ghindea sought the blessing of Metropolitan Iosif of Western and Southern Europe to request a vestment of the saint.

The parish also witnessed a miracle attributed to Saint Demetrius the New. A pregnant woman, fearing her child would be born with health problems, prayed to the saint and promised to name the baby Demetrius if he was born healthy. Her prayers were answered, and the child was born in good health.

A Historic Anniversary and Pilgrimage

In 2024, Romania commemorated 250 years since the relics of Saint Demetrius the New were brought to Bucharest. To mark this occasion, a historic pilgrimage took place, visiting parishes across the Archdiocese of Bucharest.

The sacred vestment’s arrival in Nottingham stands as a testament to the enduring faith and devotion of the Romanian Orthodox diaspora in the United Kingdom.
