Romanian Orthodox community in Southampton secures historic church linked to Titanic’s legacy

The Romanian Orthodox community in Southampton, United Kingdom, has completed the acquisition of Holy Trinity Church, a historic place of worship that preserves the memory of Titanic victims—the ill-fated ship that set sail for America from this very port.

The purchase took place in two stages: the church building was acquired on December 14, 2024, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Iosif of Western and Southern Europe, followed by the acquisition of the adjacent Church Hall on February 24, 2025.

This milestone was achieved through the pastoral care of Father Ovidiu Semerean and the dedication of the faithful, who fully contributed to raising the necessary funds.

Beyond being an administrative success, this achievement is a testament to the steadfastness and unity of the Romanian Orthodox community in Southampton, which is under the spiritual protection of Saint Callinicus of Cernica.

Holy Trinity Church is an imposing place of worship located in the Millbrook area, initially built in 1884 on the site of an older church dedicated to Saint Nicholas.

Inside, the church houses a chapel dedicated to the heroes of World War I, as well as commemorative plaques honoring those who perished on the Titanic. Many of the victims of the tragic shipwreck were residents of Southampton, making this church an enduring symbol of memory and faith.
