Romanian Orthodox parish near Rome acquires land for its first church

The Romanian Orthodox Parish of the Hieromartyr Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra, in Civita Castellana, Italy, has purchased a plot of land to build its first church. This marks a significant milestone for the Romanian Orthodox community near Rome. The acquisition was finalised at the beginning of October.

The property includes an existing building that will be adapted for use as a church. It also has a hall that will serve as auxiliary space for parish activities.

The project envisions the creation of a place of worship, parking area, space for processions, a dining hall, catechetical classroom, children’s playgrounds, and sports areas.

“For our faithful, it is essential to have our own holy place, without paying rent anymore. A church where we can baptise our children, celebrate weddings, and pray together while preserving our Romanian faith and traditions,” said parish priest Cristian Liahu.

Located about 45 km north of Rome, Civita Castellana is an ancient town in the province of Viterbo. It is known for its ceramic craftsmanship and for hosting a large Romanian community that has grown over the past two decades.

The Romanian Orthodox Parish in Civita Castellana was founded in 2017 and entrusted to Father Cristian Liahu. The parish is dedicated to the Holy Hieromartyr Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra, who participated in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea.
