Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada begins construction of religious and cultural center near historic Boian community

The Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada has launched a project to build a religious, cultural, and missionary center in Hairy Hill, near the historic Romanian community of Boian.

Bishop Ioan Casian of Canada blessed the site where the building will be constructed at the end of last week.

The project is titled “New Generations, Same Roots” and aims to establish the “Metropolitan Saint Dositheus” Center – a diocesan metochion and a center for religious, cultural, and missionary activity.

“The fulfilment of this 53-year-old aspiration is beginning to take shape in a year full of significance for the Orthodox Church in general and the Romanian Patriarchate in particular: 1700 years since the First Ecumenical Council, 140 years of autocephaly, and 100 years since the Romanian Orthodox Church was elevated to the rank of Patriarchate,” the diocese announced.

The project’s goal is to counter the phenomenon of cultural assimilation and loss of identity by providing a place for pilgrimage, prayer, and reconnection with Romanian traditions.

The center is located on the site of the former parish of the “Nativity of the Mother of God” in Hairy Hill, approximately 4 km from the historic “Dormition of the Mother of God” Church in Boian.
