Romanian Orthodox Community in Cyprus marks 30th anniversary with cultural and religious events

The Romanian Orthodox Community in Cyprus is celebrating this year three decades since its founding. This celebration is marked by a series of cultural and religious events.

On Sunday in Nicosia, Romanians celebrated in the presence of Metropolitan Christophoros of Karpasia. Also present was Romania’s Ambassador to Cyprus, Dan Mihalache.

They were joined by Yannis Panayiotou, Cyprus’s Minister of Labour and Social Insurance. Additionally, Romanian MEP Eugen Tomac and presidential adviser Ana-Maria Geană were also in attendance.

Video messages of congratulations were sent by Romania’s President Nicușor Dan. Anita Demetriou, President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, also sent a message. The celebration concluded with a special concert by Damian Drăghici & Band.

The event, attended by 300 Romanians, was organized with support from the Department for Romanians Abroad.

The anniversary celebrations will continue on Sunday, October 5, with a Divine Liturgy and a memorial service in Romanian, celebrated at the Romanian church in Nicosia by Father Petre Matei, the representative of the Romanian Patriarchate in Cyprus.

Father Matei will commemorate all the promoters of the Romanian cause and the departed members of the Romanian community.

The Romanian Orthodox Community in Cyprus was founded in 1995 under the name Alliance of Romanians in Cyprus. In Paphos, Cyprus, there is also a Romanian School.
