Romanian pupils in Italy will be able to take part in Romanian Language, Culture and Civilisation (RLCC) courses during the 2026–2027 school year under a programme aimed at preserving language and identity in the diaspora.
Parents can enrol their children until May 8 by submitting a request to their school’s administration, asking that the school be included in the programme and giving consent for their child’s participation in RLCC classes. The Romanian Embassy in Italy has made an application template available online.
For a school to host the courses, a minimum number of applications is required: at least seven children for kindergarten groups and at least 15 pupils for primary, middle or high school levels.
Depending on available resources and the number of Romanian teachers in Italy, the Romanian Language Institute will determine how many groups will operate in the next academic year. Results are expected to be announced at the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
RLCC programme
The “Romanian Language, Culture and Civilisation” programme was launched in 2007 at the initiative of Romania’s Education Ministry and the Romanian Language Institute, amid growing Romanian migration to European Union countries.
The project aims to help children in the diaspora preserve their mother tongue and cultural identity, while also supporting their integration into host-country education systems.
The programme currently operates in several European countries, including Italy, Spain, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal and France.
In Italy, the programme has been active since the 2007–2008 school year under a bilateral education agreement and currently involves around 10,000 pupils in 350 schools.
