Romanian Ambassador highlights St Dumitru Stăniloae hesychast theology at Vatican Conference

Romania’s Ambassador to the Holy See and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, George Bologan, delivered a lecture at the Vatican on Wednesday, discussing Romanian hesychast theology and tradition, with particular emphasis on the work of Saint Dumitru Stăniloae.

Speaking at a conference organised by the “Carità politica” Association, Ambassador Bologan presented Romanian Orthodox spirituality as a unique synthesis between the ascetic–mystical tradition of the Christian East and the cultural sensitivity of a Latin-language people.

The Romanian diplomat offered an extensive presentation on hesychasm, the theology of deification, and the central role of the Jesus Prayer in spiritual life.

A significant part of his lecture focused on the work of Saint Dumitru Stăniloae, described as one of the most profound theologians of the 20th century and a key reference for understanding how Romanian Orthodoxy proposes a path of inner restoration to contemporary humanity.

“The renewal of the inner person is a solution for a world overwhelmed by sadness, desolation, and massacres,” His Excellency stressed.

The event was attended by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the Holy See and Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, who welcomed the openness to dialogue and the deepening of Eastern Christian traditions.
