The Very Reverend Archimandrite Clement Haralam, Grand Ecclesiarch of the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest, celebrated his 70th birthday on Wednesday — a life devoted to Christ and to serving others through prayer and liturgical ministry.
On this occasion, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel presented him with the Patriarchal Cross, the highest distinction of the Romanian Patriarchate, awarded for exceptional service to the Church and its mission.
Honoured for cultural and missionary contributions
“We thank you for your exceptionally rich activity,” said the Patriarch of Romania at the awarding ceremony held at the Patriarchal Residence.
“In particular, we appreciated your work in publishing musical texts for our Church’s services. Your efforts to edit and print Byzantine music in Romanian have greatly contributed to the Church’s missionary work,” Patriarch Daniel noted.
He added: “We wish you many years of health, along with the entire community of the historic Patriarchal Cathedral!”

Born into a large family
Archimandrite Clement Haralam was born on July 23, 1955, in Zlătunoaia, Botoșani County, into a family of eight children.
Monastic life runs in the family: his paternal uncle, Archimandrite Clement Haralamb, a monk who reached the age of 102, was awarded the Patriarchal Cross in 2023 after over seven decades of monastic service.
In the shadow of great spiritual elders
The future Grand Ecclesiarch of the Patriarchal Cathedral grew up near Sihăstria Monastery, where he received spiritual guidance from Saints Paisius Olaru and Cleopas Ilie, as well as from Elder Petroniu Tănase, the future abbot of the Romanian Skete of the Honourable Forerunner on Mount Athos.
He studied at the Theological Seminary of Neamț Monastery (1970–1975), then pursued theological studies at the University-level Theological Institute in Bucharest.
He served in various important liturgical and missionary roles: at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Iași, as abbot of the Three Holy Hierarchs Monastery in Iași, and later at St. Spyridon the New Metropolitan Cathedral and St Anthimos Monastery in Bucharest.
In 2006, he briefly led the newly founded St. Demetrius the New Monastery in Middletown, New York, USA.
Monastic roots and time on Mount Athos
Archim. Clement Haralam was tonsured into monastic life at Putna Monastery, during the abbacy of Archimandrite Iachint Unciuleac, and also spent periods living on Mount Athos.
“Father Clement gathered many testimonies, including biographies of those who led the Romanian Skete of the Honourable Forerunner, a chapter that reflects over 150 years of monastic history,” wrote Assistant Bishop Timotei of Prahova in the book Clerics Serving the Patriarchal Cathedral and the Capital (Cuvântul Vieții Publishing, 2023).
The bishop noted that the presence in Bucharest of clergy who have lived ascetic lives on Mount Athos “brings a blessing to the spiritual life of the Church, to the faithful, and the clergy.”
