His Eminence Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia met on Friday in Chișinău with a joint parliamentary delegation from Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
The delegation from Bucharest included Laurențiu Plăeșu, Vice-President of the Romanian Senate, who led the group of lawmakers from the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, while representatives of the authorities in Chisinau included Vasile Costiuc and Valentina Meșină.
During the meeting, the history and achievements of the Metropolis of Bessarabia over the past three decades were presented.
Members of the parliamentary delegation expressed deep concern over the sensitive issue of the restitution of the Metropolis of Bessarabia’s properties. The guests also voiced their hope that His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel would be able to make a historic visit to Bessarabia.
Metropolitan Petru expressed gratitude for the visit and for the constant support offered to the Metropolis of Bessarabia, while also providing a pastoral perspective on the development of church life in the Republic of Moldova.
His Eminence awarded metropolitan distinctions to university professor Dan Dungaciu and to Eugen Popescu, figures actively and consistently involved in promoting historical truth and the legitimate rights of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Bessarabia.
