Hon Metr. Nifon praises Bulgarian community during ‘Todorovden’ celebration in Târgoviște

Archbishop Nifon of Târgoviște, honorary metropolitan and patriarchal exarch, delivered a message on Saturday on the occasion of “Todorovden – the Horses’ Easter,” a traditional holiday observed annually by the Bulgarian minority in the Romanian city of Târgoviște.

The feast takes place on the first Saturday of Great Lent and derives its name from St. Theodore Tyron, to whom the day is dedicated. Members of the Bulgarian community parade through the city on horseback, organising speed and traction races, as well as a competition awarding the most beautifully adorned horse.

Archbishop Nifon explained the spiritual significance of the celebration: “Placed on the first Saturday of Great Lent, it carries a profound spiritual meaning, expressing our unity in the Orthodox faith, evoking shared roots and the desire to preserve the cultural heritage that has accompanied us throughout history.”

“Through this beautiful annual tradition, you reverently express respect for God’s creation, for the blessed land that nourishes us with its abundant fruits, and for the living creatures entrusted to us by the Creator for our benefit and support,” the Archbishop added.

He also praised the contribution of the Bulgarian community to the life of Târgoviște, wishing its members “health and mutual understanding in order to continue building together a united and prosperous community.”
