Metropolitan Nifon: National anthem calls Romanians to unity, faith, and responsibility

On National Anthem Day, His Eminence Hon Metropolitan Nifon, Archbishop of Târgoviște, emphasised the spiritual and historical significance of Romania’s national anthem, describing it as a call to unity, solidarity, collaboration, and a deepening of the country’s Christian heritage.

“Through its lyrics and melody, the national anthem invites us to unity and solidarity, to cooperation and responsibility, and to a deeper understanding of our rich spiritual and historical heritage, founded on the principles of Christ’s Gospel,” Metropolitan Nifon stated.

He described the anthem as a powerful symbol of national dignity and courage:

“The national anthem represents one of the most important symbols of Romanian identity. It embodies the nobility of soul, the aspiration for freedom and dignity, and the sacrificial struggle of our ancestors in defence of faith and country.”

In his message marking National Anthem Day, the honorary Metropolitan also underscored the anthem’s historical dimension:

“Each time it is sung, the national anthem becomes a celebration of the glorious deeds of our history, a tribute to all those who fought for the betterment of our people, and a call to carry forward our Romanian, Christian, and European values.”

His Eminence also honoured the creators of the anthem:

“Today we celebrate 177 years since the first performance of our national anthem, composed by the renowned church music composer Anton Pann, with lyrics by poet Andrei Mureșanu. The event took place in Zăvoi Park, Râmnicu Vâlcea, and highlights the vital role that our ancestral Church has played in shaping national identity and Christian European values throughout history.”

National Anthem Day is celebrated annually on July 29, commemorating “Deșteaptă-te, române!” (“Awaken, Romanian!”), one of the official symbols of the Romanian state, as recognised by Article 12 of the Romanian Constitution.
