Lower Danube Archbishop on Danube Day: It is Romania’s baptismal font

On Tuesday, His Eminence Archbishop Casian sent a message to mark International Danube Day, calling the Danube River “Romania’s baptismal font.”

“The day of June 29 increases its significance because the Orthodox calendar and that of Western Christians show us two great helmsmen, from water to land, Saints Peter and Paul,” the Archbishop of Lower Danube wrote in a message posted on the Archdiocese’s Facebook page.

“Lord, help us, all Christians around the Danube River in the Lower Danube Archdiocese and beyond, to see the two great fishermen, brothers, disciples of Christ: St. Andrew who certainly used the baptismal font of the Danube to baptize our ancestors, and his brother, Peter,” he added.

“We Christians on Epiphany Day, with our faith and the grace of the Holy Spirit, sanctify the waters of the Danube so that they water the furrows of the earth and have bread for the Liturgy and philanthropy, for our neighbour,” the Archbishop of Lower Danube continued.

He also offered a prayer: “O Lord, bring peace and spiritual and economic wealth to such a good people! Amen!”
