We are rapidly approaching the consecration of Romania’s National Cathedral, originally named the “Romanian People’s Salvation Cathedral,” yet whose history remains little known.
The construction of Romania’s National Cathedral is a process unfolding in our own time, even though the first initiative to build such a cathedral in Bucharest dates back to the reign of King Carol I. That initiative was closely linked to Romania’s state independence — to the liberation or salvation of the Romanian nation from foreign domination.
In anticipation of the consecration, the Cultural Department of the Archdiocese of Bucharest has prepared several flyers — available both in print and digital formats — detailing the chronology of the cathedral’s construction, the team overseeing the works, the modern building techniques used, as well as lesser-known facts about the cathedral’s architectural features.

The Most Important Moments in the Building of the National Cathedral
Feb.–Mar. 2005 – The site of the National Cathedral was chosen on a plot situated on Arsenalului Hill, at the intersection of 13 Septembrie Ave and Izvor Street; the land covers an area of 110,000 m² and has an almost rectangular shape. The Government issued Emergency Ordinance no. 19 / 17 March 2005 regarding the development of the Architectural Site “Romanian People’s Salvation Cathedral”.
13 Feb. 2006 – The Chamber of Deputies handed over to the Romanian Patriarchate the land plot at 13 Septembrie Ave, no. 4–60, by means of a protocol.
29 Nov. 2007 – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel officiated the service of laying the foundation stone and the blessing of the site designated for the building of the Cathedral.
28 Dec. 2007 – The adoption of Law no. 376 concerning the construction of the Architectural Ensemble “Romanian People’s Salvation Cathedral”.
2007–2010 – Preparation of the documentation for the building of the Cathedral.
28 Dec. 2009 – Launch of the tender for the selection of the National Cathedral’s architectural project.
30 June–1 July 2010 – Evaluation of the projects submitted; the winning project was produced by the company SC Vanel Exim SRL, with which the design contract was concluded.
2 Sept. 2010 – Granting of Building Permit no. 314-S for the execution of the Cathedral works.
2010 – Organisation of the building site, installation of diaphragm walls, and excavation of earth for the foundation of the future edifice.
28 June 2011 – Contract signed with SC Bog’Art SRL for the execution of the underground infrastructure.
2011 – Waterproofing of the infrastructure with lead-sheet membranes for efficiency and durability.
24 Oct. 2011 – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel blessed the Chapel of the Construction Site, with the patronal feasts: the Resurrection of the Lord, the Prodromitissa Icon of the Mother of God, and Saint John Chrysostom.
28 June 2012 – After the completion of the general raft foundation and part of the structural elements of basement level -3, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel officiated the blessing service for Cathedral’s foundations. A charter (golden bull) and the cross with which the site of the Cathedral had been blessed in 2007 were placed in a special case within the raft foundation (between axes 35–37 per ZZVV).
Apr. 2013 – The construction of the National Cathedral reached ground level.
22 July 2013 – Beginning of the works for the execution of the Cathedral’s superstructure by SC Strabag SRL.
4 Sept. 2016 – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel celebrated the first Divine Liturgy in front of the National Cathedral, on the occasion of the International Orthodox Youth Meeting.
4 Sept. 2018 – Installation of the bells in the bell tower of the western façade, at a height of 60 metres; the bells had been blessed the previous day (3 Sept. 2018).
26 Oct. 2018 – The roofing of the Cathedral’s bell tower.
2018 – Execution of the mosaics of the altar and iconostasis of the National Cathedral, under the direction of the iconographer Daniel Codrescu. The Platytera icon of the Mother of God, in the apse of the altar, measuring 16 metres in height, is the largest mosaic representation of the Theotokos in Romania and among the largest in the Orthodox world.
25 Nov. 2018 – The consecration of the altar of the National Cathedral by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel.
31 May 2019 – The visit of Pope Francis to the National Cathedral.
July 2019 – Completion of the construction of the domes and installation of the copper roofing.
8 Apr. 2025 – Mounting of the 7-tonne cross on the great dome of the National Cathedral, at a height of about 130 metres.
2019–2025 – Execution of the Cathedral’s interior decoration in the mosaic technique (approx. 25,000 m²), one of the largest mosaic iconographic ensembles.
26 Oct. 2025 – The consecration of the National Cathedral by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel.

2011 – étanchéification des infrastructures par membranes en plomb laminé, pour performance et durabilité accrues.
24 oct. 2011 – Sa Béatitude Daniel, Patriarche de Roumanie, consacre la Chapelle du chantier de la Cathédrale, placée sous les vocables de la Résurrection du Seigneur, de l’Icône de la Mère de Dieu « Prodromitsa » et de saint Jean Chrysostome.
28 juin 2012 – après l’achèvement du radier général et d’une partie des éléments structurels du sous-sol 3, le Patriarche Daniel célèbre l’office de bénédiction des fondations de la Cathédrale. Le document scellé (hrisov) ainsi que la croix ayant servi à la consécration du site en 2007 sont déposés dans un coffret spécial du radier (entre les axes 35-37, section ZZVV).
avr. 2013 – les travaux de construction de l’infrastructure de l’édifice atteignent le niveau zéro.
22 juil. 2013 – début des travaux de la superstructure de la Cathédrale, réalisés par la société SC Strabag SRL.
4 sept. 2016 – Sa Béatitude Daniel, Patriarche de Roumanie, célèbre la première Divine Liturgie devant la Cathédrale Nationale, à l’occasion de la Rencontre des Jeunes Orthodoxes du monde entier.
4 sept. 2018 – installation des cloches dans la tour-clocher de la façade ouest, à une hauteur de 60 mètres ; elles avaient été bénies la veille (le 3 sept. 2018).
26 oct. 2018 – travaux de couverture de la tour-clocher de la Cathédrale Nationale.
2018 – réalisation des mosaïques du sanctuaire et de l’iconostase de la Cathédrale Nationale sous la direction du peintre Daniel Codrescu ; l’icône de la Vierge Platytera, située dans l’abside de l’autel et haute de 16 mètres, est la plus grande représentation de la Mère de Dieu en mosaïque de Roumanie et l’une des plus grandes du monde orthodoxe.
25 nov. 2018 – consécration de l’autel et du sanctuaire de la Cathédrale par Sa Sainteté Bartholomée, Patriarche œcuménique, et Sa Béatitude Daniel, Patriarche de Roumanie.

I momenti più importanti durante la costruzione della Cattedrale Nazionale
Febbraio-marzo 2005 – Scelta dell’ubicazione della Cattedrale Nazionale su un terreno situato sulla collina dell’Arsenale, all’incrocio tra Calea 13 Septembrie e Strada Izvor; il terreno ha una superficie di 110.000 m² e una forma approssimativamente rettangolare. Il Governo ha emanato l’Ordinanza d’Urgenza n. 19 del 17 marzo 2005 relativa alla creazione del Sito Architettonico “Cattedrale della Salvezza della Nazione”.
13 febbraio 2006 – La Camera dei Deputati ha consegnato il terreno in Calea 13 Septembrie, n. 4-60, al Patriarcato Romeno, tramite protocollo.
29 novembre 2007 – Sua Beatitudine il Patriarca Daniel ha officiato la cerimonia di posa della prima pietra e di consacrazione del sito destinato alla costruzione della Cattedrale.
28 dicembre 2007 – adozione della Legge n. 376 sulla costruzione del Complesso Architettonico “Cattedrale della Salvezza della Nazione”.
2007-2010 – preparazione della documentazione per la costruzione dell’edificio.
28 dicembre 2009 – lancio della gara d’appalto per la selezione del progetto della Cattedrale Nazionale.
30 giugno-1 luglio 2010 – valutazione della selezione dei progetti; il progetto vincitore è stato realizzato dalla società SC Vanel Exim SRL, con la quale è stato stipulato il contratto di progettazione.
2 settembre 2010 – acquisizione del Permesso di Costruzione n. 314-S a eseguire i lavori di costruzione dell’edificio.
2010 – Organizzazione del cantiere, installazione delle pareti di cassero, scavo del terreno per le fondamenta del futuro edificio.
28 giugno 2011 – Stipula del contratto con la società SC Bog’Art SRL per la realizzazione delle infrastrutture sotterranee.
2011 – Impermeabilizzazione delle infrastrutture con lamine di piombo per garantire efficienza e durata.
24 ottobre 2011 – Sua Beatitudine il Patriarca Daniele ha officiato la cerimonia di consacrazione della Cappella nel cantiere della Cattedrale, con i santi patroni della Resurrezione del Signore, l’Icona della Madre di Dio “Prodromitza” e San Giovanni Crisostomo.
28 giugno 2012 – Dopo il completamento delle fondamenta generali e di parte degli elementi strutturali del seminterrato 3, Sua Beatitudine il Patriarca ha officiato la cerimonia di consacrazione delle fondamenta della Cattedrale. La carta e la croce con cui il sito della cattedrale fu consacrato nel 2007 furono depositate in un’apposita cassetta della gomma (tra gli assi 35-37 per ZZVV).
Aprile 2013: la costruzione della Cattedrale Nazionale ha raggiunto il livello 0.
22 luglio 2013: inizio dei lavori per la realizzazione della sovrastruttura della Cattedrale da parte di SC Strabag SRL.
4 settembre 2016 – Sua Beatitudine il Patriarca Daniel ha celebrato la prima Santa Liturgia davanti alla Cattedrale Nazionale, in occasione dell’Incontro dei Giovani Ortodossi di tutto il mondo.
4 settembre 2018 – Installazione delle campane nel campanile sulla facciata occidentale, a 60 metri di altezza; le campane sono state consacrate il giorno precedente (3 settembre 2018).
26 ottobre 2018 – Rivestimento della torre campanile della Cattedrale Nazionale.
2018 – Creazione del mosaico dell’altare e dell’iconostasi della Cattedrale Nazionale sotto la direzione del pittore Daniel Codrescu. L’icona della Madre di Dio Platytera, nell’abside dell’altare, con un’altezza di 16 metri, è la più grande rappresentazione in mosaico della Madre di Dio in Romania e una delle più grandi del mondo ortodosso.
25 novembre 2018 – consacrazione dell’altare della Cattedrale Nazionale da parte di Sua Santità il Patriarca Ecumenico Bartolomeo e di Sua Beatitudine il Patriarca Daniele.

Φεβρουάριος-Μάρτιος 2005 – Κατά την επιθυμία του αειμνήστου Πατριάρχου Θεοκτίστου, επελέγη ο χώρος ανέγερσης του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού, επί του Λόφου του Οπλοστασίου (Dealul Arsenalului), στη διασταύρωση της Οδού 13ης Σεπτεμβρίου και της Οδού Ιζβόρ. Ο χώρος έχει έκταση 110.000 τετραγωνικών μέτρων και σχεδόν ορθογώνιο σχήμα. Η Κυβέρνηση εξέδωσε την Πράξη Επείγουσας Ανάγκης αριθ. 19 / 17 Μαρτίου 2005, που αφορούσε την εκτέλεση του Αρχιτεκτονικού Συνόλου του «Ιερού Καθεδρικού Ναού της Σωτηρίας του Έθνους».
13 Φεβρουαρίου 2006 – Η Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων παρέδωσε, διά πρωτοκόλλου, στο Ρουμανικό Πατριαρχείο τον χώρο επί της Οδού 13ης Σεπτεμβρίου, αριθ. 4-60.
29 Νοεμβρίου 2007 – Ο Μακαριώτατος Πατριάρχης Δανιήλ τέλεσε την ιερά ακολουθία της θεμελιώσεως και του αγιασμού του τόπου, ο οποίος προορίσθηκε για την ανοικοδόμηση του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού.
28 Δεκεμβρίου 2007 – Η θέσπιση του Νόμου αριθ. 376, ο οποίος αφορά την ανοικοδόμηση του Αρχιτεκτονικού Συνόλου του «Ιερού Καθεδρικού Ναού της Σωτηρίας του Έθνους».

30 Ιουνίου-1 Ιουλίου 2010 – Η αξιολόγηση της επιλογής των σχεδίων· το επικρατήσαν σχέδιο εκπονήθηκε από την εταιρεία SC Vanel Exim SRL, με την οποία υπεγράφη και το συμβόλαιο μελέτης.
2 Σεπτεμβρίου 2010 – Η έκδοση της Άδειας Οικοδομής αριθ. 314-S, για την εκτέλεση των εργασιών ανέγερσης του οικοδομήματος.
2010 – Η οργάνωση του εργοταξίου, η τοποθέτηση των τοίχων εκ σκυροδέματος διαφράγματος (περιμετρικών τοίχων), και η εκσκαφή της γης για τα θεμέλια του μέλλοντος οικοδομήματος.
28 Ιουνίου 2011 – Η σύναψη της σύμβασης με την εταιρεία SC Bog’Art SRL για την εκτέλεση της υπόγειου υποδομής.
2011 – Η υγρομόνωση της υποδομής, με φύλλα μολύβδου, προς εξασφάλιση αποδοτικότητας και διάρκειας.
24 Οκτωβρίου 2011 – Ο Μακαριώτατος Πατριάρχης Δανιήλ τέλεσε την Ιερά Ακολουθία των Εγκαινίων του Παρεκκλησίου του εργοταξίου του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού, με πανηγύρια αφιερωμένα στην Ανάσταση του Κυρίου, στην Ιερά Εικόνα της Θεοτόκου της «Προδρομίτισσας» και στον Άγιο Ιωάννη τον Χρυσόστομο.
28 Ιουνίου 2012 – Μετά την ολοκλήρωση της γενικής θεμελιώσεως και μέρους των δομικών στοιχείων του υπογείου Γ΄, ο Μακαριώτατος Πατριάρχης Δανιήλ τέλεσε την Ιερά Ακολουθία του Αγιασμού των θεμελίων του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού. Ένας χρυσόβουλλος και ο σταυρός διά του οποίου ηγιάσθη ο τόπος του Ιερού Καθεδρικού Ναού, το 2007, εναποτέθηκαν σε μία ιδιαίτερη θήκη εντός της θεμελιώσεως (μεταξύ των αξόνων 35–37, κατά τον ZZVV).
Απρίλιος 2013 – Η ανοικοδόμηση του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού έφθασε στη στάθμη μηδέν (κώτα 0).
22 Ιουλίου 2013 – Ήρξαντο οι εργασίες ανέγερσης της υπερδομής του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού από την εταιρεία SC Strabag SRL.4 Σεπτεμβρίου 2016 – Ο Μακαριώτατος Πατριάρχης Δανιήλ τέλεσε την πρώτη Θεία Λειτουργία έμπροσθεν του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού, επ’ ευκαιρία της Συνάξεως των Ορθοδόξων Νέων εκ πάσης της οικουμένης.
4 Σεπτεμβρίου 2018 – Εγκαταστάθηκαν οι καμπάνες στον τρούλο του καμπαναριού της δυτικής πρόσοψης, σε ύψος 60 μέτρων· οι καμπάνες είχαν αγιασθεί την προηγούμενη ημέρα (3 Σεπτεμβρίου 2018).
26 Οκτωβρίου 2018 – Επραγματοποιήθη η κάλυψη του τρούλου-καμπαναριού του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού.
2018 – Ετελέσθη η κατασκευή του ψηφιδωτού του Ιερού Βήματος και του ικονοστασίου του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού, υπό την καθοδήγηση του ζωγράφου Δανιήλ Κοντρέσκου (Codrescu). Η εικόνα της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου της Πλατυτέρας, που κοσμεί την αψίδα του Ιερού Βήματος, έχουσα ύψος 16 μέτρων, αποτελεί τη μεγαλύτερη απεικόνιση της Θεοτόκου σε ψηφιδωτό στη Ρουμανία και μία από τις μεγαλύτερες στον ορθόδοξο κόσμο.
25 Νοεμβρίου 2018 – Ετελέσθη η Ιερά Ακολουθία των Εγκαινίων του Ιερού Βήματος του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού υπό της Αυτού Θειοτάτης Παναγιότητος, του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχου κ. Βαρθολομαίου, και του Μακαριωτάτου Πατριάρχου Ρουμανίας κ. Δανιήλ.
31 Μαΐου 2019 – Η επίσκεψη του Πάπα Φραγκίσκου στον Ιερό Εθνικό Καθεδρικό Ναό.Ιούλιος 2019 – Η ολοκλήρωση της κατασκευής των τρούλων και η τοποθέτηση των χάλκινων καλυμμάτων.
8 Απριλίου 2025 – Η τοποθέτηση του σταυρού (βάρους 7 τόνων) επί του μεγάλου τρούλου του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού, σε ύψος περίπου 130 μέτρων.
2019-2025 – Η εκτέλεση της αγιογραφίας του Ιερού Καθεδρικού Ναού, με την τεχνική του ψηφιδωτού (περί τα 25.000 τετραγωνικά μέτρα), ενός εκ των μεγαλύτερων εικονογραφικών συνόλων ψηφιδωτού.
26 Οκτωβρίου 2025 – Η Ιερά Ακολουθία των Εγκαινίων του Ιερού Εθνικού Καθεδρικού Ναού υπό της Αυτού Θειοτάτης Παναγιότητος, του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχου κ. Βαρθολομαίου, και του Μακαριωτάτου Πατριάρχου Ρουμανίας κ. Δανιήλ.
