Holy Synod elects Bishop of Dacia Felix, adds new feast days to church calendar

The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church met for a working session at “Patriarch Teoctist” Aula Magna of the Patriarchal Palace, under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, on Tuesday, July 5, 2022.

The Holy Synod elected by secret ballot the patriarchal auxiliary bishop Ieronim of Sinaia as Bishop of Dacia Felix. This episcopal see became vacant on February 17, 2022, after the transfer of His Grace Bishop Daniil Stoenescu to the position of assistant bishop to the Diocese of Deva and Hunedoara, bearing the title of Bishop of Densuș.

The Diocese of Dacia Felix is a diocese of the Romanian Orthodox Church, with its headquarters in Vršac, which has jurisdiction over the Romanian Orthodox communities in Serbia and is directly subordinated to the Romanian Patriarchate. The Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Vršac operates as a diocesan cathedral.

At the same meeting, the following decisions were also taken:

  • The Holy Synod included in the calendar of the Romanian Orthodox Church the feast of the Translation of the relics of St. Demetrius the New to Bucharest on July 13, starting with 2024;
  • The Holy Synod approved the texts of the Synaxarion, the Akathist and the Service of Saint Barsanuphius of Optina (feast day – April 1);
  • The Holy Synod approved the texts of the service and the supplicatory canon of Saint Gregory Palamas (feast day – November 14);
  • The Holy Synod approved the text of the prayers for peace, which will be inserted in the Liturgikon, Euchologion and Prayer Books.
