Historical Event at Tismana Monastery: Romania’s Treasure Museum Inaugurated

Tuesday, 26 July 2016, the inauguration festivity of   Romania’s Treasure Museum was held at Tismana Monastery, Gorj County. It is an exhibition space unique in Europe inaugurated within a ceremony held with the participation of His Eminence Irineu, Metropolitan of Oltenia, and of the Governor of the National Bank of Romania, His Excellency Mugur Isărescu, together with representatives of the local public authorities and with other outstanding guests from the financial banking realm – the official website of the Eparchy informs.

The event was preceded by the Symposium entitled Odyssey of the Romanian National Bank Gold, 1944-1947, when the Governor of the RNB, Mugur Isărescu was awarded the Saint Nicodim Order, class I, by the Metropolitan of Oltenia, for the contribution bought to the organisation of the Museum of Romania’s Treasure at Tismana Monastery.

A country can be economically developed and grow its children in peace and quietness by the help of its treasure. It was here, in the cave of Saint Pious Nicodim, that this treasure was sheltered, and as a result of the contribution and involvement of Mr Governor of the National Bank in arranging the Treasure Museum in the cave under Tismana Monastery, the Metropolitanate of Oltenia decided to award him Saint Nicodim Order, class I, His Eminence said.

From 1944-1947, given the troubled events caused by the presence of the Soviet troops in the territory of our country, the cave under Tismana monastic settlement sheltered the treasure of Romania, namely 200 tons of gold, as well as about 12 tons gold received from the Polish state for protection.
