Greek community in Romania marks National Day with Te Deum service in Bucharest

The Greek community in Romania marked Greece’s National Day on Sunday with a Te Deum service officiated at the Chapel of the Annunciation in Bucharest.

The commemorative events took place at the place of worship on the grounds of the Embassy of Greece in Romania. Attendees included Her Excellency Lili Evangelia Grammatika, Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to Romania, His Excellency Dimitrie Pericle Stivaros, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Romania, Andrei Ohaci, Deputy Mayor of Bucharest’s Sector 2, and representatives of the city of Volvi, Greece.

In her address, the Greek Ambassador to Romania highlighted the historical significance of the occasion, noting that “this year marks 205 years since the proclamation of the Revolution in the Romanian Principalities and 200 years since the Exodus of Messolonghi, a historic landmark of the courage and sacrifice of the Greek people, as well as of the Philhellenes”.

Following the Divine Liturgy and Te Deum, the events continued with a wreath-laying ceremony at the bust of Rigas Feraios Velestinlis, a monument located in the courtyard of the Embassy chapel.

The National Day celebrations also included a concert of Byzantine and traditional Greek music, organised under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Bucharest, marking 125 years since the establishment of the chapel within the institution.

Greece’s National Day is celebrated on 25 March, coinciding with the Feast of the Annunciation. The date commemorates the beginning of the War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire in 1821.
