Decisions of the Holy Synod regarding the Diocese of Huși

Patriarhia Română

On 17-18 August 2017, the Holy Synod and the Permanent (Standing) Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church have met in a spirit of prayer and much responsibility for the peace and unity of the Church. The two church bodies unanimously approved a series of amendments to the Statute for the Organization and Functioning of the Romanian Orthodox Church and to the Regulations of the disciplinary-canonical authorities and of the judicial courts, especially regarding the examination of allegations (complaints), the investigation and the judging of hierarchs.

However, it was found that going through all the new statutory and regulatory steps regarding the conduct of a canonical church trial might take several months, which would greatly prolong the uncertain situation in the Huși Diocese.

In this context, although considering himself innocent, His Grace Corneliu has decided to withdraw from the ministry as Bishop of Huși for the peace and benefit of the Church and to remain in complete obedience to the Holy Synod.

The Holy Synod approved his request and decided to vacate the episcopal see of Huși, in order to elect a new bishop for this diocese within a maximum of sixty days, according to the statutory provisions.

During its working session, the Holy Synod took note with sadness of the aggressive campaign of media companies and networks directed against the servants of the Romanian Orthodox Church, often carried out in complicity with rebellious clergy. This campaign produces much sorrow among clergy and believers.

Of course, this negative attitude towards the Church’s servants must draw us even closer to Jesus Christ, the eternal High Priest and the Head of the Church, who urges us saying: “In the world, ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33) and assures us that “the gates of hell shall not prevail against His Church” (Matthew 16:18).

At the same time, all Church servants must observe the discipline of the Church, and to renew constantly their spiritual life for an accurate and responsible pastoral ministry carried out for the benefit of the believers they pastor.
