His Eminence Metropolitan Laurențiu of Transylvania blessed the foundation stone on Bright Monday for the future “Ascension of the Lord” Church in Brașov, dedicated to the heroes of the 1987 workers’ uprising and the 1989 anti-communist revolution.
The church will also be dedicated to the Holy Confessor-Priest Dumitru Stăniloae.
The day began with the Divine Liturgy at the “Ascension of the Lord” and “Synaxis of the Mother of God” Church of the Blumăna 3 Parish in the city centre, attended by numerous faithful, many of whom were dressed in traditional Romanian costumes.
Later, the foundation stone for the new church was consecrated on a nearby site.
“Brașov deserved and needed another monument, alongside all those it already has, so that its history may remain connected to the past and open towards a future guided by God,” Metropolitan Laurențiu said.
In recognition of their contribution to advancing the project, the metropolitan awarded the “Metropolitan Ioan Mețianu” Order to Adrian Ioan Veștea, president of the Brașov County Council, and George Scripcariu, mayor of Brașov, as well as other local officials.
The idea of building a major church in Brașov’s civic centre dates back to 1993, intended to honour the city’s anti-communist heroes involved in the events of 1987 and 1989.
The project is led by the Association for the Construction of the “Ascension of the Lord” Cathedral in Brașov.
