Romania’s Central Bank issues commemorative coins for the Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate

The National Bank of Romania’s commemorative coins dedicated to the Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate, featuring the National Cathedral and Patriarchal Palace.

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has released into circulation, starting October 6, a set of gold, silver, and copper-tombac coins. These are dedicated to the Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate.

The obverse of the coins features a depiction of the National Cathedral. It includes the inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “CATEDRALA NAȚIONALĂ”, the year of issue – 2025, the Romanian coat of arms, and the face value: 500 lei for the gold coin, 10 lei for the silver coin, and 1 leu for the copper-tombac coin.

The reverse side displays the Patriarchal Palace, headquarters of the Romanian Patriarchate, accompanied by the inscription “PATRIARHIA ROMÂNĂ.”

The gold and silver coins are presented in special brochures. They are accompanied by certificates of authenticity in Romanian, English, and French. The copper-tombac coin is delivered in presentation leaflets within cardboard cases.

The maximum mintage is 1,000 pieces for the gold coin and 5,000 pieces each for the silver and copper-tombac coins. Prices are set at 23,000 lei (gold), 630 lei (silver), and 250 lei (copper-tombac).

All three Romanian Patriarchate Centennial commemorative coins are legal tender in Romania. They can be purchased through the regional branches of the National Bank of Romania.

2025: A Solemn Year

This year, the Romanian Orthodox Church celebrates 100 years since its elevation to the rank of Patriarchate and 140 years of autocephaly. Among the anniversary events is the consecration of the National Cathedral, scheduled for October 26.
