Romanian Bishop urges faithful to ‘melt the icebergs of the soul’ after Greenland mission

His Grace Bishop Macarie of Northern Europe on Saturday urged the faithful to “melt the icebergs of the soul” at the conclusion of a pastoral mission in Greenland.

His Grace spoke about the missionary experience carried out in extreme conditions, as well as its spiritual fruits.

“After the seven days spent in Greenland, I can give glory to God. On the frozen shore, I also found patches of fertile ground, and I hope these seeds will bear fruit and grow.”

“It was extremely cold, with temperatures reaching minus 32 degrees Celsius, yet when we began the Divine Liturgy, the sun immediately rose, showing us that the Sun of Righteousness, our Saviour Jesus Christ, is with us,” the Bishop of Northern Europe said.

Pilgrimage Planned for Greenlandic Youth

The hierarch also recalled the baptism of a young Greenlander, who was given the name Saint Cleopas of Sihăstria.

“I gathered these young Greenlandic Inuit. We will organise a pilgrimage to Romania in May,” he added.

He also met with Romanians living there: “I met the two Romanians who have been here for 18 years. There were once 12 compatriots, but only two remain.”

This marked Bishop Macarie’s second visit to the world’s largest island, following his first trip in 2018, when he visited the Romanian community in Greenland.
