His Eminence Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia expressed hope that “brothers will live together again” in a message issued on the occasion of the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities.
According to Metropolitan Petru, the day represents “a work of divine Providence through which history was set on the natural path of unity”.
“24 January is inscribed in the conscience of the Romanian people as a work of divine Providence, through which history was set on the natural path of unity. The Union of the Principalities was the fruit of an awakened conscience, of a will gathered around the truth of our nation, and of a deep understanding that the Romanian people, on both banks of the River Prut, endure through communion,” the metropolitan said.
Metropolitan Petru added that major steps have been made towards unity, with only its final form still under discussion.
“Today, in a complex and often troubled historical context, we see how the natural bonds between brothers are being restored with steady steps. The European path embraced by the Republic of Moldova, its unprecedented closeness to the Motherland, and the joint efforts of state institutions, the academic world, intellectuals, civil society and people of good faith show that unity, in its essence, has already been restored. What is still being sought is its full form,” he said.
Unity between brothers
Metropolitan Petru said he is convinced that the day will come when “brothers will live together”.
“We are confident that God, through the prayers and intercessions of the holy Bessarabian martyrs, who suffered for faith, for freedom and for the unity of the nation, will once again ordain that brothers live together, as in the blessed days of the Little Union and the fulfilment of the Great Union.”
“On this day of national celebration, we call upon the clergy and the faithful Romanian people to prayer and to historical responsibility, asking God to strengthen our courage and our arm, to enlighten the minds of our leaders, and to preserve the Romanian people in peace, dignity, and unity of faith and feeling,” Metropolitan Petru added.
