50 years of Anglican-Orthodox dialogue: Metropolitan Nifon attends Boston anniversary meeting

His Eminence Metropolitan Nifon, Archbishop of Târgoviște and Patriarchal Exarch, is attending the plenary meeting of the International Commission for Orthodox-Anglican Theological Dialogue. This year’s conference, which is hosted by the Huffington Ecumenical Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, is taking place from October 4 to 11.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the start of the bilateral dialogue, a special anniversary session took place last Sunday at the Maliotis Cultural Center, part of the Hellenic College Holy Cross.  The session presented the historical development of the relations between the two Churches.

In addition to Metropolitan Nifon, representatives from nine sister Orthodox Churches, including the Patriarchates of Constantinople, Alexandria, and Antioch, are participating in the meetings.

The theme of this year’s plenary session is “The Mission of the Church in the World Today.”

The dialogue group is currently co-chaired by Metropolitan Athenagoras of Belgium on behalf of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Bishop Michael Lewis, representing the Anglican Church.

Among the commission’s recent achievements is a joint statement on organ transplantation, “Organ Donation: A Gift Full of Hope,” which will soon be published.

The International Commission for Orthodox-Anglican Theological Dialogue, established in 1973, is the longest-running uninterrupted bilateral dialogue group between the two Churches. To date, the commission has issued seven joint statements.
