February 1923 – Bishop Nifon Niculescu (baptized Nicolae) passed away
in Bucharest. He studied at the “Central” Seminary (1872 – 1880) and at
the Faculty of Theology of Bucharest (1888 – 1892). Deacon at the
“White” and “Crețulescu” (1882) churches of Bucharest, priest at the
“White” church (1883 – 1895), eparchial inspector at the Metropolitan
See of Ungrowallachia (since 1881), director of the Holy Synod Office
and religion professor in Bucharest and Ploiești. When a widower, he was
tonsured into monasticism at Cernica Monastery (1895); he is ordained
hierarch and will operate as Assistant Hierarch at the Metropolitan See
of Ungrowallachia, with the title of “Ploieșteanul” (1895 – 1909).
Elected Bishop of Lower Danube, seated in Galați (22 March 1909) he
serves since enthronement (26 March 1909) till his retirement form the
chair (1 January 1922). He served as hierarch at the church of “Domnita
Balasa” of Bucharest till his death. Intense urban activity in the
eparchy, especially for the monasteries of Dobrudgea. During his service
he consecrated the Episcopal Cathedral of Galați (6 August 1917), of
which foundation stone had been laid in 1906. He was president of the
Administration Committee of the Library of “V.A. Urechia” in Galați. He
published precious works. He supported the campaigns of the World War I.
