In 2015, the Romanian Orthodox Church celebrates a series of important events of her history, as follows:

90 years since the raising of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the rank of Patriarchate (February 1925);

60 years (October 1955) since the proclamation of the canonisation of a few Romanian saints (hierarchs, monks), great spiritual shepherds of the Romanian provinces: Saint Hierarch Calinic from Cernica, Bishop of Ramnic; Saints Hierarchs Ilie Iorest and Sava Brancovici, Metropolitans of Transylvania, as well as Saints Pious Confessors Visarion and Oprea etc,;

The calendar of the Romanian Orthodox Church also includes many other Romanian saints (hierarchs, priests and monks) who distinguished themselves through a great pastoral activity. In the course of time many great spiritual shepherds served, in the eparchies of the Romanian Patriarchates, from among the hierarchs, priests and monks, whose life and activity are models for today’s faithful.

A special place among the spiritual shepherds is held by Saint John Chrysostom whose life and activity distinguished him as a supporter of the right faith, as a teacher of repentance, as an enlightener of the Christian family and of the monastic life, as well as a promoter of the Christian charity.

Therefore, following the initiative of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, during the working sessions of 29 October 2013 and 29 September 2014, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church approved that the year 2015 should be declared as Solemn year of the parish and monastery mission today and Commemorative year of Saint John Chrysostom and of the great spiritual shepherds within eparchies.

This theme will be treated in the eparchies and institutions of theological education of the Romanian Orthodox Church which will organise in 2015 debates, colloquies, seminars, symposiums, conferences and icon, frescoes, mosaic exhibitions in order to present the history, life and activity of the parish and monastery in the past and present, as well as of some famous married priests and father confessors from monasteries who contributed through their service and activity to the support, consolidation and stimulation of the life and mission of the parish and monastery.
