April 1937 – Bishop STROIA IOAN passed away in Alba Iulia. He was born
on 20 January 1865, in Fântânele (Cacova), county of Sibiu.
Secondary
studies (1879 – 1887): at the German Evangelical Gymnasium (4th form)
and at the “Andrei Șaguna” Gymnasium of Brașov. Higher studies at the
Theological Institute of Sibiu (1887 – 1890): studies of Pedagogy,
History and Geography (1890 – 1893) at the Universities of Jena and
Budapest (only one semester), with a doctor’s degree in Jena in 1893.
Professor (1894 – 1901) at the Theological – Pedagogical Institute of
Sibiu; priest and archpriest of Săliște (1901 – 1908), then at Sibiu
(1908 – 1919), school inspector of Săliște (1901 – 1908), then in Sibiu;
school inspector of the county of Sibiu 81919 – 1922), regional
director of education for Sibiu district (1922 – 1923); metropolitan
counsellor in Sibiu (1923 – 1925). On 20 May he was appointed “Bishop of
the Army”, seated in Alba Iulia, where he served till his death.
Works:
Ethic Moments in Jesus Christ’s speech in the mountains (1896); Moral
ideals. General views on the most remarkable systems of ethics (1901).
He also published manuals for the six forms of the people’s schools (in
collaboration with teachers Dumitru Lăpădat and Iuliu Crișan).
