May 1898 – Priest and professor of theology GALACTION LIVIU MUNTEANU
was born in Cristian, county of Brașov. Studies at the “Andrei Șaguna”
secondary school in Brașov (1909 – 1917), with equivalence at the
Faculty of Theology of Cernăuți, where he was awarded the doctor’s
degree (1924). Professor of Bible study of the Old and New Testament at
the Theological Academy in Cluj (since 1924), and from 1948 and 1952 at
the University Theological Institute, rector of the Academy (1937 – 1943
and 1946 – 1948), then of the Institute (1948 – 1953), parish priest in
Bistrița (1952 – 1957), eparchial vicar at Cluj (1957 – 1958), member
of the Eparchial Assembly of the Diocese of Vad, Feneac and Cluj, iconom
stavrofor, he was imprisoned for a few years in the communist prisons
(from November 1958), because the had drafted a plan for teaching
Religion (sentenced to 8 years prison).
Works: History of the
creation in the light of the scientific research (1929); Sermon on the
Mountain (1932); Resurrection of Christ (1934); Pentateuch faced with
the modern criticism (1937); Old Testament and Pentateuch (1937); Old
Testament and Christianity (1937); Bible Paradise. Fall of the
forefathers in sin. Exegetic study (1939). Historical value of the
synoptic Gospels, Introductory study (1939); Epistle of Saint Paul the
Apostle to Galatians (1940); Life of Jesus Christ, our Saviour (1942);
Life of Saint Paul the Apostle (1942); Life of Saint John Evangelist the
Apostle (1945); Co-author of the manual for the Study of the New
Testament for the Theological Institutes, Bucharest, 1954, XII + 208
pages (2nd edition, Bucharest, 1977, 256 p). Many articles in
“Renașterea” and “Viața ilustrată” as well as in some other periodicals.
He passed away on 8 March 1961, in the prison in Aiud.
