13 August 1917 – Priest and poet ALEXEI MATEEVICI passed away. Studies at the Theological Seminary of Chișinău (1910) and at the Spiritual Academy of Kiev (1914). From 1914 – 1915, he was a priest and a substitute professor at the Seminary of Chișinău. Since 1915, military priest on the front of Galitia. He published religious, patriotic and social poems. His best-known poem is “Our language”, considered as the best poem in the Romanian language dedicated to the language (at present the state anthem of the Republic of Moldova). He also published theological-historical studies, translated short stories, sketches and poems by Russian classic authors, and collaborated to several religious and laic periodicals of Chișinău. He died of typhus on the front and was buried in Chișinău, in the Armenian Cemetery.
