Wooden church for Japan’s first Orthodox cemetery ready, funds needed for transport

Romanian Orthodox faithful in Japan, after acquiring a plot for Christian burials, have also commissioned the construction of a small wooden church in the Maramureș architectural style. Built in Romania, the church is now awaiting shipment to Japan, with fundraising underway to cover transport costs.

“This is the wooden church that will serve the Orthodox Cemetery in Minami Alps, Yamanashi,” announced Parish Priest Daniel Corîu on the Facebook page of the Tokyo Parish.

“With your help, our donors and supporters, we managed to build and assemble the church in Romania. In August, it was disassembled and packed for shipment to Japan,” he said.

The transport costs are estimated at around €12,000, so any contribution is welcome. Donors will be commemorated during Divine Liturgies in Japan.

The cemetery purchased by Romanians in Yamanashi Prefecture is the first Orthodox cemetery in Japan, where Buddhism and Shintoism prescribe cremation. Orthodox faithful of other nationalities who wish to be buried according to Christian tradition will also be welcomed.

Tokyo Parish is under the patronage of St. George the Great Martyr, while the cemetery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
