Wiki Loves Monuments 2022: Photo of small wooden church in Bessarabia named among winners

A photo showing the wooden church in the village of Gîrbova, Ocnița district, Republic of Moldova, was ranked 11th in the latest edition (2022) of the Wiki Loves Monuments international competition.

From over 150,000 images registered, 337 photos were selected by the jurors of the 36 national competitions.

“These are the 15 best images from around the world. We are pleased and proud to announce that the 11th place was assigned to the image of Iurie Șveț from the Village Museum in Chisinau – this being the first time in the history of Wiki Loves Monuments contests that Moldova was recognized at this level,” the organizers from the Republic of Moldova said.

The competition aims to obtain photographs of heritage monuments to be offered free to illustrate Wikipedia. This free online encyclopedia is viewed daily by millions of people around the world.

The total number of images uploaded to date has reached approximately 2.75 million, making this the most prominent photo contest in the world.

At last year’s edition, a snapshot by photographer Serghei Zysko featuring the Hotin Citadel was designated as the best photo of a historical monument in the Chernivtsi Region.
