Take a virtual tour of Ukraine’s oldest monastery: Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

Online visits are now possible to the Monastery of the Caves (Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra), the oldest Orthodox monastery in Ukraine.

The initiative, under the supervision of the city of Kyiv, seeks to publicise the expansive 26-hectare monastery complex.

The virtual tour encompasses several notable landmarks, including the Great Belfry, the “Ascension of the Lord” Cathedral, the “Saints Anthony and Theodosius” Church, and a section of the caverns housing the relics of the monastic community’s saints.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site monastery is divided into Upper and Lower Lavra.

The most significant churches of the Pechersk Lavra include the Lord’s Nativity Church, the Nativity of the Theotokos Church, the Annunciation Church, the Holy Trinity Church, The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral and The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church.

The first documentary attestation of the monastery dates back to 1051. Over time, several Romanian saints lived here, including Saint Pachomius of Gledin, Bishop of Roman (April 14).
