St Vladimir’s Seminary in New York launches fundraiser to publish Stăniloae’s Palamas volume in English

St Vladimir’s Seminary in New York has launched a fundraising campaign to publish, for the first time in English, the volume The Life and Teaching of Saint Gregory Palamas, written by Saint Dumitru Stăniloae.

Those who wish to support the publication financially can donate through a fundraising platform hosted on the institute’s website.

Funds raised through sales of the book’s print run will be used to support the training and education of the seminary’s students.

In its presentation of the volume, St Vladimir’s Seminary describes the Holy Confessor Priest Dumitru Stăniloae as “the most influential and creative Romanian theologian of the twentieth century for his significant contributions to systematic theology and for his translations of the Church Fathers into Romanian. A political prisoner for a time under Romania’s communist regime, he was canonised by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 2025.”

A landmark theological work

The Life and Teaching of Saint Gregory Palamas is regarded as one of the most important works of Orthodox theology of the 20th century.

It was first published in 1938 in Sibiu, at the Archdiocesan Printing House.

The book was reissued several times after 1990, with the most recent edition published in 2006 by the Biblical and Mission Institute of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Father Dumitru Stăniloae, a professor of theology in Sibiu and Bucharest, was canonised by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church in July 2024, with the title the Holy Confessor Priest Dumitru Stăniloae and a feast day on October 4.
