Relics of Saint Nicholas and Saint Constantine Brâncoveanu were transferred on Tuesday from the “New St. George” Church in Bucharest to the diocesan Cathedral in Gyula, Hungary. The holy relics will be venerated during a pilgrimage in several Romanian Orthodox parishes in Vienna and the surrounding regions.
The right hand of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker and fragments of the relics of the Holy Prince-Martyr Constantine Brâncoveanu were placed for veneration in the Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in Gyula, where numerous faithful gathered in prayer.
“It is a great joy and blessing that here, in the Orthodox and Romanian Diocesan Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Gyula, we can receive Saint Nicholas himself—through his holy relics, through his hand,” said Bishop Siluan of Hungary.
These relics were brought by Father Emil Nedelea Cărămizaru from Bucharest, with the blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, en route to Vienna to be offered for veneration by the faithful.
“Sân Nicoară” — Local Heritage and Devotion
Father Emil Nedelea Cărămizaru expressed heartfelt thanks to Bishop Siluan for the warm reception, emphasizing the significance of the relic’s presence in a place where the name “Sân Nicoară”—an archaic regional name for Saint Nicholas—has long been inscribed on the cathedral entrance.
“We were welcomed with open arms and spiritual joy. Before entering this historic Romanian soul-filled cathedral in Hungary, I saw the words ‘Sân Nicoară’ written,” he noted.
“His Grace Bishop Siluan explained to me that this is the old Banat and regional expression for Saint Nicholas.”
Austrian Pilgrimage Itinerary
Between June 18 and 24, the holy relics will be available for veneration in six parish communities across the Romanian Orthodox Deaneries of Vienna and Graz in Austria.
