Romanians in Malta are promoting their traditions and cultural identity through a new project running from 1 July to 30 October, according to a press release. The initiative was launched by the country’s only Romanian Orthodox parish.

The project targets Romanian families, children, and young people, aiming to strengthen their connection to their mother tongue, traditions, and Romania’s cultural and spiritual values.

Entitled Romanian Identity and Culture in the Diaspora in Malta, the project also aims to promote Romanian heritage within Maltese society and encourage dialogue between the two communities.

“For the Romanian community in Malta, identity means not only maintaining our connection with Romania, but also passing it on to future generations. Through this project, we want younger generations to know their roots and our Maltese friends to gain a better understanding of Romania’s culture and history,” said parish priest Fr George Alexandru Popescu.

One of the project’s major events will take place on 24 October at San Anton Palace in Attard, the presidential residence of Malta.

Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of the Republic of Malta, will host the cultural event under her patronage.

The gathering will celebrate the historical and cultural ties between Romania and Malta, with particular attention given to Queen Marie of Romania, who spent part of her childhood on the island.

“Romania remains the land of our roots, while Malta has become a second home for many of us,” representatives of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Malta stated in a Facebook post.

The Romanian Identity and Culture in the Diaspora in Malta project is funded by the Department for Romanians Abroad.
