Next year marks 175 years since the birth of poet Mihai Eminescu. At the initiative of the Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, 2025 has been declared “Eminescu Year.”
The leadership of the two academies decided to propose a series of cultural events and activities for 2025 to emphasize the significance of the occasion.
Key Events and Activities
The first major event will take place on January 15, during a communications session attended by full, corresponding, and honorary members of the two academies.
Cultural events will continue with a research cycle that begins during Eminescu Year and extends throughout the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, which was launched in Romania on November 12, 2024.
Several special editions will also be organized throughout the year, including:
- The World Congress of Eminescu Studies,
- A Summer School for Young Researchers,
- Events dedicated to National Culture Day and the national celebration, “Our Romanian Language.”
Highlighting Eminescu’s Legacy
The poet’s work will be republished in new editions, including his complete poetic creations and translations into English. The collection will also include translations into 85 other languages.
New postal issues will be released to commemorate 175 years since Eminescu’s birth, including stamps, envelopes, and commemorative postmarks.
Institutional and International Involvement
State institutions will actively contribute by organizing cultural events in libraries, schools, memorial houses, cultural centres, and universities.
Through representatives from Romania and the Republic of Moldova, UNESCO’s involvement further highlights this celebration’s international dimension.
The program was approved at the end of last month.
Members of the Presidium of the Romanian Academy and the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova stated, “We hope the proposed academic program will be supported and enriched by additional actions and cultural events organized by Romanian communities and cultural institutions worldwide, promoting our culture within the framework of universal value dialogue.“
