Patriarch Daniel offers condolences after deadly Swiss ski resort fire

Following the devastating fire at the Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland on January 1, which claimed dozens of lives and left many more injured, Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church issued a message of condolences and prayers, expressing solidarity with the victims, their families, and all those affected by the tragedy.

Swiss authorities have reported that around 40 people have died and approximately 115–119 others have been injured, many critically, with investigations underway into the cause of the blaze, which preliminary findings suggest may have been sparked during New Year’s celebrations.

Message of Condolences and Prayers

With profound sorrow, we have received the news of the tragic event that occurred on January 1, 2026, at the Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland, as a result of which 40 people lost their lives and approximately 100 were injured.

In these moments of mourning, we lift up prayers to our Lord Jesus Christ, He who is the Resurrection and the Life (cf. John 11:25), for the repose of the souls of those who have fallen asleep in the Lord, for the healing and swift recovery of the injured, and for the comfort and spiritual strengthening of their families.
