Pasărea Monastery to host local canonisation of two Romanian nuns

The local proclamation of the canonisation of St Philothea of Pasărea and St Elizabeth of Pasărea will take place on 5 June 2026. To mark the occasion, an extensive liturgical programme will be held at Pasărea Monastery on 4–5 June 2026, as follows:

Thursday, 4 June 2026

5:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. – Vigil service in honour of Sts Philothea and Elizabeth of Pasărea (Great Vespers with Artoklasia and Matins).

Friday, 5 June 2026

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Divine Liturgy celebrated by an assembly of bishops, priests and deacons.

12:00 p.m. – Solemn ceremony of the proclamation of the canonisation, including the reading of the Synodal Tomos of Canonisation and the presentation of the saints’ icons.

St Philothea of Pasărea

St Philothea of Pasărea, the mother of St Callinicus of Cernica and three other sons, was born Floarea Antonescu. After being widowed, she entered monastic life at Pasărea Monastery and later received the Great Schema.

She lived a life adorned with the virtues of humility, obedience, prayer, and love for God and neighbour, and reposed in the Lord on 8 November 1833.

St Elizabeth of Pasărea

St Elizabeth of Pasărea (1970–2014) lived a life of strict asceticism, joining the community of Pasărea Monastery at a young age.

Beginning in 2003, she lived as a hermit on Mount Giumalău in Suceava County. She received the Great Schema at Pasărea Monastery on 19 April 2006 and spent her life in prayer, stillness and humility. She reposed in the Lord on 5 June 2014.
