The monks of the Orthodox Monastery of Mull in Scotland have translated chants of the Divine Liturgy into English and transcribed them using Byzantine musical notation. Both sheet music and audio recordings are available for free on the monastery’s official website.
This initiative supports priests, church chanters, and faithful who celebrate or attend Orthodox services in English, providing complete notation for all liturgical parts of the Divine Liturgy.
“The beauty of Orthodoxy is revealed not only through words but especially through its chanting, which stands as a wholesome prayer. To offer this chanting also in English is a form of missionary love,” emphasized Archbishop Atanasie of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
A Vital Resource for the Orthodox Diaspora
The project offers an essential resource for Orthodox communities in the diaspora, young Orthodox Christians, church chanters seeking to serve in local languages, and all who strive to balance fidelity to Church Tradition with pastoral adaptation to different cultural contexts.
According to the Archdiocese of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, such efforts help cultivate an authentic and living liturgical life, attuned to Orthodoxy’s pastoral and liturgical needs in the West while preserving Byzantine worship’s beauty and sacred order.
The Mull Monastery
The Orthodox Monastery of All Celtic Saints in Kilninian, on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, represents a revival of Orthodox monastic life in the region after nearly 1,000 years.
Reestablished in 2009 on the site of a 4th-century Celtic monastery, the church—initially dedicated to Saints Ninian and Cuthbert—was donated to the Romanian Orthodox Church.
